Dental Health
There are two good reasons why regular dental care is vitally important.
Research has also indicated possible links between poor oral health and systemic illnesses.
Excellent oral hygiene, coupled with routine dental appointments, will help ensure that a person's overall health will stay at a very high level. We can help prevent problems from occurring and also prevent minor problems from becoming major catastrophes.
The second reason is that we are able to provide cosmetic services that build self-esteem and contribute to the overall well-being of the individual.
The latest research is starting to tie in periodontal disease and heart disease. Heart disease, diabetes and oral cancer are all problems that can impact oral health, and we are acutely aware of the special needs of patients who have underlying systemic complications.
We routinely screen for oral cancer and thoroughly examine not only your teeth, but also all the oral structures and soft tissue.
Having a healthy smile from childhood through adulthood is not only an aesthetic goal but is often a reflection of one's overall health. A healthy smile keeps you on the road to optimum oral health.
An effective oral hygiene regimen is a vital component of a healthy lifestyle. Brushing, flossing and a balanced diet are the foundation of home care.
In conjunction with office checkups, we can almost always prevent the onset or spread of periodontal (gum) disease. The loss of teeth to gum disease is virtually unknown to our regular patients.
Procedures
Dental Care For All Ages
A healthy beautiful smile is a precious commodity, which is attainable throughout one's life. Think about the little pearly white teeth of your child and how his or her smile brings joy to you. We can help keep that smile radiant, not only for children but also for parents. Your mouth reflects both your total health and self esteem and we can provide that excellent care. People notice your eyes first and then your smile.
Regardless of your age, dental care is very important and we can provide excellent care. For the youngster, it is vital to keep the baby teeth in proper condition. Obviously, chewing is important, but healthy teeth also play a crucial role in maintaining space for the permanent dentition. As your child grows, new teeth appear and must be kept in great shape.
Preventative care is stressed for everyone, both young and old. Taking care of small problems and being proactive helps avoid complex procedures and everyone benefits.

Teeth Whitening
Your teeth may darken or yellow over time and significantly contribute to the loss of a youthful, vibrant smile. The causes are varied and include smoking, poor hygiene and general aging. Adult teeth have been present since approximately age 7 or 8 and one must be aware of the effects of aging and wear and tear of the teeth.
There are also people who have naturally darker or discolored teeth. Regardless of the cause, in most instances, we are able to improve appearance by cosmetic procedures, which may include bleaching, microabrasion, veneers or crowns. Bleaching or whitening is very popular because it is completely non-invasive and relatively simple to achieve. We offer a range of bleaching options in our office.
Veneers and Bonding
Many people dream of having the perfect smile but don't want to undergo orthodontic treatment or wait an extended period of time to correct such dental problems as chipped or crooked teeth, discoloration or other irregularities. Veneers are an ideal solution to achieve the results you want in a short period of time.
Veneers are thin, semi-translucent, and are customized from porcelain material. Bonded to your teeth, veneers are strong, durable and resist staining. Generally applied in two office visits, they can last many years with proper oral hygiene and regular dental checkups.
Crowns and Bridges
Crowns
Crowns, which are usually made from porcelain or metal, are long-lasting coverings of weakened or unaesthetic teeth. Someone who chooses a crown will know that it will provide strength and also beauty.
Bridges
When a natural tooth is missing, through dental disease or injury, it is very important to replace the missing tooth. Instability results when there is an unnatural space in the dentition and the remaining teeth tilt and move, creating a number of ill effects. Poor occlusion, tilted and shifted teeth as well as an increase in gum disease and cavities all result from missing teeth. A bridge spans the gap where the missing tooth existed. Many of the consequences of missing teeth can be corrected or prevented with bridges and implants.

Crowns and bridges are great ways to strengthen your teeth and beautify your smile.
Dentures and Partial Dentures
At times there are no alternatives to full dentures or partial dentures. There are numerous steps involved with fabricating dentures and each one needs to be as accurate as possible. Having well fitted dentures is a challenge and we are confident in our ability to provide aesthetic and functional prostheses. Being able to eat and smile is important at every age.
Implants
When patients lose a tooth or teeth due to trauma or dental disease, a dental implant is an ideal option for patients with good oral health. Implants look and feel like your own teeth and can last many years, if properly placed and maintained. Dental implants aid in replacing a single tooth, several teeth or even all your teeth. The implant itself is constructed of titanium and looks like a cylinder, creating an artificial root. The titanium serves as an anchor with implant supported crowns and bridges. After the implant supported crown is placed into the jaw, healing takes approximately six months, while the bone and titanium "osseointegrate." After fully integrating, the implant is ready for the replacement crown.
Replacing several or all of your teeth is also possible with implant-supported full bridges or implant-supported dentures. Patients are able to preserve their natural bite with implants, achieving more comfort and stability than with conventional dentures.
Proper oral hygiene is especially important when a patient receives a dental implant. Patients are advised to visit us at least twice a year to ensure the health of their teeth and implants. Dental implants can last for many years being virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth.
Restorative Dentistry
What is restorative dentistry? Simply put, restorative dentistry describes basic procedures which fix or restore broken, defective, or decayed teeth. When a tooth is diseased or broken, we can fix it with silver or white fillings; if extensively involved and very weakened, with a crown, ceramic or metal.
Prevention is the best possible solution to dental issues, but if there are basic faults then depending on the size and location of the problem we have several choices.Fillings help fix decayed or fractured teeth. White fillings are ideal for areas that are visible and also are excellent for small or medium size cavities. Silver fillings are more durable and economical and can be used for larger cavities for they are not as technically demanding.
When fillings are too large or the tooth is severely weakened, we recommend crowns(caps) that will restore both form and function. Crowns strengthen and fortify weakened teeth. There are several choices of crowns, some very aesthetic, such as ceramic, others very strong such as metal(gold the best). There are also crowns which combine the features of metal and ceramic. The ceramic/metal crowns are both very aesthetic and strong.
Whatever the restorative procedure needed, you will be assured that the best materials will be placed, utilizing the most modern techniques. Your health and safety is our utmost concern. Of course we welcome any and all questions concerning restorative procedures.
Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous oxide, more commonly known as laughing gas, is often used as a conscious sedation agent during a dental visit. The gas helps alleviate anxiety, making the patient more relaxed and comfortable. There is also an element of analgesia (pain relief) when nitrous is used. Minor procedures can often be accomplished with little or no local anesthetic.
Nitrous is administered with oxygen and the patient becomes calm and detached, yet is conscious and able to communicate. At no time is the patient "put to sleep" or unconscious. After treatment, the nitrous is turned off and pure oxygen is administered to clear out the residual nitrous. The sedative effects disappear almost immediately and there are few, if any, side effects. Your doctor will provide you with pre- and post-sedation instructions.
Periodontics
Periodontics is a branch of dentistry that deals with the study and treatment of the soft, supporting tissue and the underlying bone. Oral health focuses upon the hard and soft tissue.
Periodontal disease effects the gums surrounding the teeth and the bone in which the teeth are anchored. Periodontal or gum disease is a bacterial infection, which causes the destruction of vital bone and gum. Plaque, which is a haven for bacteria, is a prime culprit in the cause of gum disease.
If we can control plaque, we can effectively prevent gum disease in most cases. Unfortunately, periodontally related problems are often discovered after they have persisted for an extended period of time.
The good news is that even when periodontal disease is found, the dentition can be stabilized and the prognosis may be very favorable. Gum disease ranges from mild (gingivitis), which affects only the soft tissue to early, moderate or advanced periodontitis, which affects not only the soft tissue but also the hard supporting bone.
Periodontitis is a more serious, and non reversible disease than gingivitis, which is milder and often completely correctable with no apparent lasting effects.
Modern techniques allow us to treat many forms of gum disease very conservatively, using instrumentation (scaling, root planing) and medications, antibacterial rinses and antibiotics. The results of conservative treatment have been very impressive.
Endodontics
Of all the misunderstood terms in dentistry, the ultimate is " root canal therapy ." When a root canal is mentioned, there is an immediate state of shock and fear. Fortunately, this is completely unwarranted. Endodontic or root canal therapy is the best way to save a fractured or severely decayed tooth. The alternative to root canal treatment is extraction and clearly this is not a very good choice.
When a tooth requires endodontic therapy, the pulp tissue inside the tooth becomes infected through disease or trauma. The pulp tissue is comprised of blood vessel, connective tissue and nerve tissue.
Treatment consists of removing the infected pulp and then thoroughly cleaning the canal and chamber before placing a rubber-like material, gutta percha, into the canal. Essentially, we are placing a filling to the tip of the root and sealing it like a cork in a bottle. A temporary filling is placed between visits to keep the chamber clean until a final restoration is placed. The final restoration will usually be a crown and, in some instance, a standard filling. It is important that the final restoration strengthens and protects the tooth after the root canal treatment is finished. Patient safety and comfort is very important and everything possible will be done to ensure a pleasant experience.
Root canal therapy by itself is very successful with over a 90 percent success rate. The choice of endodontic therapy is a very good decision, as it prevents further damage to your oral health and helps maintain a beautiful smile with well-functioning dentition.
Extractions
In our office, we take pride in the fact that very few of our patients require extractions. Unlike the past when people did not have viable alternatives, we can now offer choices that will save teeth.
We can help prevent the loss of teeth and all the problems associated with that loss. Decayed, cracked or damaged teeth are no longer automatically doomed. We can place crowns, which protect and strengthen weakened teeth. Crowns, which "cap" a weakened tooth, can be fabricated out of various materials that are chosen for the specific situation. They can be made of gold, porcelain or synthetic materials and are custom-made for the individual. It will take several visits to construct the crown due to the need for a very accurate fit. Between visits, the patient will have a temporary crown placed. Once the crown is seated and cemented, it is important for the patient to maintain a high level of hygiene and routine care. With the joint cooperation of the patient and the dentist, one can expect a crown to last for a significant length of time.
