Nitrous oxide, more commonly known as laughing gas, is often used as a conscious sedation agent during a dental visit. The gas helps alleviate anxiety, making the patient more relaxed and comfortable. There is also an element of analgesia (pain relief) when nitrous is used. Minor procedures can often be accomplished with little or no local anesthetic.

Nitrous is administered with oxygen and the patient becomes calm and detached, yet the patient is conscious and able to communicate. At no time is the patient "put to sleep" or unconscious. After treatment, the nitrous is turned off and pure oxygen is administered to clear out the residual nitrous. The sedative effects disappear almost immediately and there are few, if any, side effects. Your doctor will provide you with pre- and post-sedation instructions.
